Spotify has begun enforcing its household rules for Duo and Family subscriptions by requiring in-person verification. Members must scan a QR code displayed on the plan manager's device within seven days. Failure to complete the scan results in an immediate downgrade to the free tier.

The company's support documentation confirms the new policy. This follows recent user reports on Reddit detailing the QR code prompts. Users who miss the deadline are also blocked from joining other Duo or Family plans for 12 months.

This enforcement targets a long-standing rule that all members of a shared plan must live at the same address. While the rule exists to prevent casual sharing among friends, it creates complications for households with members living apart. Situations such as a college student living off-campus or a spouse working in another city may trigger the verification process.

The crackdown could affect more than just informal sharing groups. Families who believed they were complying with the terms may now face scrutiny. The verification step forces a physical meeting between the plan owner and the member to confirm their connection.

Wall Street analysts have long viewed this area as a potential revenue source. In an October 15 report titled Music in the Air: 10 Years On, Goldman Sachs estimated that a meaningful share of family plan users are friends rather than household members. The report noted that enforcement had been minimal in practice despite the written rules.

The firm identified additional monetization upside from tightening verification on multi-user plans. By closing the gap between policy and application, Spotify aims to convert casual sharers into individual paying customers. The QR code method serves as the first major automated step in this transition.

Spotify has not announced a pause or extension for the current deadline. Users who have not yet received the prompt should check their account status for updates. The 12-month exclusion period begins as soon as the account is moved to the free tier.
