OpenAI is reportedly moving fast to secure another enormous private funding round, effectively pausing its rush to go public.
According to sources speaking to CNBC, the AI lab is in advanced talks to raise up to $30 billion. This new capital injection would value the company at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis, a figure that has the financial world watching closely.
Coatue Management is leading the charge on this deal, joining forces with key investors from the United Arab Emirates. This follows a similar report from Bloomberg last month, which cited a slightly higher valuation target of $1.4 trillion. While terms are still being negotiated and could shift, the core structure remains a massive private raise rather than an immediate IPO.
The involvement of UAE-based investors suggests a strategic partnership beyond just cash. CNBC reports that the funding could be tied to a deal securing additional computing capacity for OpenAI in the region. This infrastructure support is critical as the company scales its models, though OpenAI has declined to comment on the specifics of the arrangement.
If this round closes at the proposed valuation, OpenAI would shatter records as the most valuable private company in history. This milestone would also set an extremely high bar for its upcoming initial public offering. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, just months after its previous raise in March valued it at $852 billion post-money.
This aggressive valuation strategy sends ripples through the broader AI sector, particularly affecting rival Anthropic. Many observers believe Anthropic’s IPO is imminent, with rumors suggesting its public S-1 filing could drop any day. CNBC notes that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its debut. This comes shortly after Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May, a move widely seen as its final major private round before joining the public markets.
Both giants filed confidential paperwork in June, signaling a race to reach public status. However, OpenAI’s move to lock in trillions in private value first changes the dynamic, forcing competitors to justify their own price tags in a rapidly shifting landscape.
