Anthropic has officially entered the crowded market of AI productivity tools with the release of Claude Duet, a new application designed specifically for professionals and small businesses. This launch represents a strategic pivot for the company, moving beyond general chat interfaces to offer an agent that actively manages complex workflows. The timing is significant, as the industry is currently shifting focus from passive AI assistants to proactive agents that can execute tasks on behalf of users. By targeting the business sector, Anthropic aims to capture a segment of the market that requires reliability and structured data handling rather than casual conversation.

The technical specifications of the new tool highlight its heavy reliance on existing infrastructure. Built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model, Duet integrates with more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive connectivity allows the agent to interact with various professional software and services. Furthermore, the system supports financial transactions through Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. These integrations enable Duet to handle online purchases, though the company emphasizes that sensitive actions like payments require explicit user approval to maintain control.

The operational model of Duet differs sharply from its competitors in specific ways. Anthropic has drawn a clear line between Duet and personal agents like Instinct, noting that the new tool is not designed for handling errands or booking tickets. It also lacks the ability to display its browser usage in real time. Instead, the agent focuses on constructing daily briefings, generating dashboards, and suggesting actions based on user data. It operates within its own virtual machine, allowing it to complete background tasks while the user continues their work. The agent will pause and request approval only when a critical decision point is reached.

Key figures at Anthropic have outlined the scope of what the agent will and will not do. While it can process data and manage workflows, it is restricted from trading securities or moving money between bank accounts. This limitation is designed to reduce risk for business users. The company also introduced a new classifier to monitor every message, preventing the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the agent is programmed to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification, adding an extra layer of privacy protection for users.

The competitive landscape is intensifying as rivals also push into the business agent space. Meta has released a version of Muse tailored for small businesses with app connections, while OpenAI’s Dots focuses on professional tool integration. Other players in the market include Hark, Grok Bot, and Fo. Anthropic’s entry adds another layer to this competition, forcing users to choose between tools that prioritize personal convenience versus those that prioritize structured business automation. The distinction matters for companies looking to implement AI without the unpredictability of a general-purpose assistant.

For the average user in Texas and the broader South Central region, this development signals a maturing market. The proliferation of weekly launches means that differentiation is now key. Anthropic is betting that professionals will prefer a tool that stays out of the way and handles data-heavy tasks over one that tries to manage daily life. The focus on small businesses suggests that the company sees an opportunity in helping smaller organizations leverage enterprise-grade AI capabilities without the complexity of custom development.

Availability is currently limited to a research preview. Claude Duet is accessible via the iOS and Android apps, as well as through the web interface at Claude.ai. Access is restricted to Pro and Max customers who have joined the waitlist. This phased rollout allows Anthropic to gather feedback and refine the agent’s performance before a wider release. The waitlist model also creates a sense of exclusivity, which may drive early adoption among tech-forward professionals.

The stakes for this launch are high. If Duet succeeds, it could redefine how small businesses approach automation. However, if it fails to distinguish itself sufficiently from rivals like Meta Muse or OpenAI Dots, it risks becoming just another option in a saturated field. The success of the agent will depend on its ability to deliver consistent value in the background without requiring constant user intervention. As the market shifts toward agentic workflows, the next few months will be crucial in determining which tools become the standard for business AI.
