The Wisconsin men's tennis team is now 6-6 for the season. The Badgers lost their final match of the weekend to Middle Tennessee State on Saturday. The defeat leaves Wisconsin without a victory in away matches this year.
Wisconsin dominated its previous match on Friday at Nielsen Tennis Center. The Badgers defeated Pennsylvania 6-1. This marked the first time in program history that Wisconsin beat the Quakers. Last season, Pennsylvania won their meeting 4-3.
Senior Josef Dodridge and junior Osgar O'Hoisin won the opening doubles match 6-1. Sophomores Daniel Soyfer and Chase Colton added a 6-2 win in the second doubles point. Wisconsin then took all but one of the five singles matches. Colton, Soyfer, and Dodridge won in straight sets. Freshman Jesper Freimuth won 6-2, 6-3. O'Hoisin won a three-setter 7-5, 4-6, 10-2.
The team traveled to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to face a Middle Tennessee State squad that stood 10-2. The Blue Raiders had not lost at home and had shut out five opponents. Wisconsin took the doubles point, with O'Hoisin and Dodridge winning 6-4. Senior Chema Carranza and Freimuth won 6-2 in the second doubles point.
Soyfer won his singles match 6-4, 6-3 to reach 10-0 in singles for the season. Middle Tennessee State then won the next three singles events to take a 3-2 lead. Dodridge tied the score at 3-3 with a 7-6, 6-1 victory. The match hinged on the final point between Carranza and Tom Moonen.
Carranza lost the first set in a tiebreak but won the second 6-1. He led the final set 5-4. Moonen served for the match and won the set 7-5. The result gave Middle Tennessee State a 6-5 win. Head coach Danny Westerman said the team must keep working to overcome these situations. Wisconsin returns to Nielsen Tennis Center next weekend to face Cornell and UW-Green Bay.
