iPhone Duo owners face $249 cost for essential gear

Apple has released the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, but full functionality requires additional hardware that costs up to $249. The device ships without a stylus or a power adapter, forcing early buyers to purchase separate items to access key tools like Apple Pencil support and rapid charging. Tech site 9to5Mac detailed the necessary add-ons for the new phone, noting that several are already available for purchase with temporary discounts.

Apple Pencil support represents a new capability for the iPhone platform, allowing users to write and sketch on both the outer and inner screens. The feature is designed around the proportions of a standard A-series notebook. However, the support arrives in the iOS 27.2 update scheduled for release next week. Only the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is compatible with the Duo. The stylus is currently listed at $69, reduced from its standard price of $79.

The phone can charge to 50 percent in approximately 20 minutes, but only with a high-power adapter. The standard box includes a USB-C cable but no charger. To achieve the maximum speed, 9to5Mac suggests the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max, which is priced at $34, down from $39. An alternative is the Anker 100W USB-C charger with a five-foot cable, available for $29.

For users who rely on the phone for navigation, the ESR MagSafe Car Mount offers a magnetic hold that clips to an air vent. Priced at $19, down from $29, this accessory pairs with CarPlay to display maps on the vehicle's screen while the phone shows step-by-step directions. The larger display of the Duo is expected to enhance this navigation experience.

Protection options vary in price and feature. Third-party cases include the SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case with a built-in stand and screen protector for $29, and the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro clear MagSafe case for $39. Apple sells the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand for $129 and a basic iPhone Duo Case for $79.

The Duo also updates StandBy mode to display views even when the phone is not charging. Two new views, Home Camera and Home Modular, provide access to smart home devices. Users can monitor security cameras at a glance. 9to5Mac recommends the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 and the eufy 4K camera at $69, both compatible with HomeKit.

As a general recommendation, the site suggests the AirPods Pro 3 for those without current earbuds. Currently discounted to $199 from $249 on Amazon, the earbuds are noted for their noise cancellation capabilities. The total cost for the stylus, charger, car mount, and one of the recommended cameras reaches $249.
