Jamie Dornan to Play Aragorn in New Lord of the Rings Film
The actor replaces Viggo Mortensen in The Hunt for Gollum, which is set to release in late 2027.

Jamie Dornan, 44, is set to assume the role of Aragorn in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. He replaces Viggo Mortensen, 68, who portrayed the character in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy. The new production is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027.
The narrative of the new film takes place between the events of The Hobbit and the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Because of this timeline, the filmmakers selected a younger actor for the part. Dornan addressed the transition in an interview with L’Officiel Italia, acknowledging the weight of the decision. He stated, “There’s pressure when you try to follow in those footsteps.”
Dornan described the character as “a super iconic role” and expressed his intent to do his “absolute best.” He noted that for him, Aragorn will always be associated with Mortensen. The actor called Mortensen’s performance one of his all-time favorites and said he feels honored to capture some of the energy the older actor brought to the character. Dornan added that “there isn’t a single part of me that’s trying to do it better than he did.”
Leo Woodall has also joined the cast, taking on the role of Halvard, a Dúnedain ranger. Woodall spoke to the same outlet about his impression of Dornan’s work. He said, “I can honestly say that, for me, Aragorn is now Jamie Dornan.”
Andy Serkis directs the film and stars in it as both Gollum and Sméagol. Several actors from the original trilogy are returning for the new project. Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf the Grey. Elijah Wood will return as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace will again play Thranduil.
The cast also includes new additions Kate Winslet and Anya Taylor-Joy. Winslet will play a character named Marigol, while Taylor-Joy will play Seren. The production aims to expand the existing universe with these new characters and returning favorites.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled for a wide theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
