Nicolas Jackson scored two goals to lead Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City. The result at Villa Park ended a perfect start for the visitors. It also stopped the winning run for manager Enzo Maresca. This was the first time City lost in the Premier League this season.

The match broke open very early. Villa took the lead just six minutes into play. Marc Guehi made a heavy touch that gave Jackson the ball. He cut inside Elliott Anderson and shot high past Gianluigi Donnarumma. The early strike set the tone for the rest of the game.

City dominated possession for much of the first half. However, they could not find a way past Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov all had their chances stopped. Ndiaye even hit the post. The pressure finally resulted in a goal in the 52nd minute. Erling Haaland headed in a cross from Ndiaye. It was his 13th goal in 10 appearances this season.

Villa responded quickly to the equalizer. On the hour mark, Ibrahim Mbaye found space behind the defense. He crossed the ball to Jackson. Jackson placed a low shot that Donnarumma should have saved. City pushed for a late winner but could not break through again. Josko Gvardiol had a close chance, but Suzuki kept it out by tipping the shot onto the crossbar.

This defeat means Arsenal can move level on points with City. That would happen if Arsenal beats Everton later on Saturday. For Villa, the win is their sixth in seven games across all competitions. It lifts them to sixth place in the table. The result highlights the work of manager Unai Emery. He has transformed Villa into a Champions League club over four years.

Emery faced a significant challenge this summer. He lost many key players from the team that won the Europa League last season. Six starters from that squad left during the transfer window. Despite this, the new signings have already had an impact. Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi have helped the team overcome a slow start.

City have kept winning despite ongoing issues. The 10-time champions are appealing a guilty verdict on over 100 charges. These charges relate to breaking financial rules between 2009 and 2018. Heavy sanctions, including relegation, are possible. There was little sign of this stress affecting the players on the pitch. However, two defensive errors proved costly in this match.
