Elena Rybakina has locked in her place in the final of the Ningbo Open, defeating sixth seed Diana Shnaider in a gritty two-set battle that ended 6-3 and 7-5. The victory positions the world number one to successfully defend her title and adds another significant result to her resume before the WTA Finals begin next month.
Rybakina will face unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez in Sunday's championship match. Fernandez earned her berth by beating Czech player Marie Bouzkova with an identical 6-3, 7-5 scoreline in the earlier semifinal held at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre in eastern China.
The path to the final was not smooth for the Australian and US Open champion. She arrived in Ningbo after a challenging period that included a heavy loss in Beijing and a withdrawal from Wuhan due to a foot injury. While she showed flashes of elite tennis against the 13th-ranked Shnaider, the match also revealed moments of inconsistency that required correction.
Rybakina started the opening set with aggressive intent, hitting powerful winners from deep in the court to seize control. However, a sudden drop in form forced her to fight for the set point, which she finally converted on her 11th attempt. She acknowledged the difficulty in a post-match comment, noting, "It was an important game, and it was a long one. It was on my serve, and it was a struggle." She added that while she played the first balls well, closing the game proved tricky despite many opportunities.
The second set mirrored the first with similar patterns of struggle and success. The 27-year-old three-time Grand Slam winner continued to battle with first-serve accuracy but managed to win crucial points to break for a 4-3 lead. Shnaider responded by breaking for love in the 10th game, but Rybakina answered with big hitting to retake the lead in the next game. She then served with greater assurance to seal the victory.
The left-handed game of Shnaider presented a specific tactical challenge for the Kazakh star. Rybakina noted that playing against left-handers is always difficult due to the rarity of such opponents on the tour. She explained, "I needed some time. The returns were not as bad, but during the rallies, to switch the pattern was a little bit of an issue for me, but I'm happy I managed to win in two sets." This presents a similar hurdle for Sunday, as her final opponent Fernandez is also left-handed.
Rybakina aims to refine her play in the final before heading to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week. Following that event, she will begin her defense of the WTA Finals title at Indian Wells starting November 8. The upcoming schedule serves as a reminder to her rivals that she is in strong form heading into the year-end events.
When asked about the prospect of winning back-to-back trophies in Ningbo, the champion remained measured in her expectations. She stated, "It's never easy. Of course I'll try to do my best. I'm going to fight and give my all tomorrow." This approach reflects a focused mindset as she looks to secure the title once again.
