Bayern Munich enters Sunday's Bundesliga match against Freiburg with a one-point lead at the top of the table, but without its head coach on the sideline. Vincent Kompany is hospitalized with a virus and faces an absence measured in weeks rather than days, according to the club's director of sport.

Max Eberl, the director of sport, confirmed on Saturday that Kompany is in stable condition. He stated that medical examinations are ongoing to determine the specific nature of the 40-year-old's illness. Eberl emphasized that the club has not set a recovery timeframe and will wait for a full diagnosis before discussing return timelines. "Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We're not starting to put together any timeframes," Eberl said.

Aaron Danks, the English assistant coach, will direct the team for the Freiburg fixture. Danks presided over Saturday's press conference in Kompany's absence. He reported speaking briefly with Kompany on Friday to check his health, noting that they avoided football discussions. "All the football operations are in our hands, and we'll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward," Danks said.

The club did not seek a postponement for the league match. Eberl argued that a strong performance and a positive result would be the most effective way to support Kompany's recovery. "That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover," he added. A second-team match scheduled for Friday was postponed following Kompany's collapse on the training pitch.

Joshua Kimmich, the Germany national team captain, will also miss the game due to bereavement leave that began on Tuesday. Danks confirmed the absence during the press briefing. Kompany returned to the dugout for Wednesday's home match against Arsenal despite missing the pre-match press conference due to illness.

Kompany acknowledged that he ignored early warning signs of the virus. "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course, I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point, my body just said, 'Enough is enough!'", he said. Bayern's next Champions League match is scheduled for November 3 in Madrid against Atletico Madrid.
