Jennifer Lawrence has confirmed her return as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The announcement follows months of speculation about whether the original cast would reunite for the new installment.
Lawrence spoke about the reunion on the Call Her Daddy podcast with host Alex Cooper. She described stepping back into the role as unbelievable. She noted that the production crew remained largely the same, including the camera operators and assistant directors she had worked with previously. She said the experience was emotional and that she and co-star Josh Hutcherson walked to the bathroom with their arms around each other.
Woody Harrelson also returns to the cast as Haymitch Abernathy. Lawrence recalled that Harrelson entered her hotel room through the window without being invited. She joked that he would not have used the door because he does not respect boundaries.
The new film centers on a teenage Haymitch, played by Joseph Zada, during the 50th annual Hunger Games. The story follows his path to the arena. The cast includes Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Ralph Fiennes, Elle Fanning, Glenn Close, Billy Porter, and Kieran Culkin.
Lawrence originated the role of Katniss in the first four films of the franchise, which began in 2012. The new project is based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. It is scheduled for release in theaters on November 20.
