Latvia's National Armed Forces announced on Saturday, October 24, that they have located the wreckage of a drone that crashed within the country. The debris was found in the Alūksne district. Military officials indicated that the aircraft likely crossed into Latvian airspace on October 18.
The incident initially raised alarms after residents reported a sound resembling an explosion. The National Armed Forces and the State Police launched a search for a crash site. They halted that initial investigation after two days because available data was insufficient to determine the cause. A new internal review is now assessing how the event unfolded.
The timing mirrors a recent event in a neighboring state. On Sunday, October 18, Lithuanian authorities discovered the wreckage of a suspected drone in the village of Juodžionys, located in the Pasvalys district. Lithuania reported that the drone entered its airspace from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated that the aircraft contained explosives.
Ukrainian diplomat Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, suggested that Russian electronic warfare measures likely caused the Lithuanian incident. He added that Ukraine expressed regret over the event. Latvian authorities confirmed that no civilians were injured during the crash. They also reported that civilian infrastructure suffered no damage. Officials have not identified any further threats from the debris.
