A 10-year-old girl was found tied up in a closet in Oregon City, Oregon, on Wednesday afternoon, ending a search that began after she was taken from her home in Canby. The U.S. Marshals Service led the rescue operation, and tactical teams extracted the child from the residence. She was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The incident started at 1:39 a.m. when a man entered an apartment in Canby. Investigators state he injured a 12-year-old child and took the 10-year-old. The older child was rushed to a hospital and remained under care as of Wednesday afternoon. The parents are cooperating with police in the ongoing investigation.
Vince Edgar Chavez, the suspect in the case, was arrested after attempting to flee through the back of the Oregon City house. U.S. Marshals confirmed his capture during the operation. The Canby Police Department explained why an Amber Alert was not issued initially. Officers stated they had not gathered all the necessary information required to trigger the alert at the time the girl was taken.
Carus Elementary School, where the 10-year-old is a student, increased its police presence during the Wednesday afternoon dismissal. The school cited an abundance of caution as the reason for the extra security. The district sent a message to the community expressing support for the child and her family.
The school district noted that they are there to support students, staff, and families in whatever ways they can. This statement followed the rescue and the subsequent arrest of the suspect. The case remains active as authorities continue their inquiry into the events of early Wednesday morning.
