Sir Patrick Stewart, the veteran actor celebrated for his roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the X-Men films, has died at age 86. His representative confirmed the news on Thursday.
Stewart’s death followed a short period of illness involving Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. Kelly Bush Novak, his longtime spokesperson, shared a statement on social media saying he died in the loving care of his wife, Sunny.
Novak described Stewart’s final days as a brief and poignant journey. She noted that he was held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, and laughter.
The statement characterized his passing as a reflection of his lifelong devotion to others. Novak added that the peaceful ease on Stewart’s face served as an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It is a progressive condition that begins with mild memory loss and has no cure. Lewy body dementia is a distinct type of dementia that can cause complications with movement, behavior, thinking, and mood. It remains unclear when Stewart received diagnoses for either condition.
The actor’s representative did not provide a specific date for his diagnosis. The announcement was made via his official social media channels. No further details regarding funeral arrangements or a public memorial were included in the initial statement.
