The final structural beam for the Central Neighborhood Residential Colleges was placed on the Vanderbilt University campus on Sunday, marking the highest point of the construction frame.

The project will house more than 1,300 students upon completion. Two of the three new residential colleges are scheduled to open in August 2028, while the final college will open in August 2029.

Carl Rodrigues, the vice chancellor for real estate, facilities and development, noted that the event represents more than a construction milestone. He stated that every design choice, from architecture to common spaces, reflects the university's commitment to student well-being.

Hundreds of students, faculty members, staff, alumni, and community members gathered during Homecoming weekend to sign a gold structural beam before it was lifted into place. The beam is a traditional symbol in construction, denoting the completion of a building's skeleton.

The new neighborhood includes mixed-use spaces for collaboration, green areas, and various living options, ranging from single rooms to suites. This development follows the model of the West End Neighborhood project, which includes the Zeppos, Rothschild, and Carmichael colleges.

The Central Neighborhood is designed to expand academic experiences beyond the classroom. The layout strategically incorporates areas to support the residential college experience, mirroring the transformational approach taken in the previous West End development.

Vanderbilt facilities officials have directed community members to follow @FacilitiesVU on Instagram or sign up for Anchor Alerts to receive updates on this project and other campus construction efforts.
