A shooter left one person dead and three others injured at a youth football championship game in Madison, Ill., on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. at Madison Senior High School.
The game was unrelated to the host school. Authorities transported the three injured victims to local hospitals. A fourth victim died at the scene.
The Greater St. Louis Major Case Squad is investigating the shooting. Lt. Andrew Pierson, the squad's public information officer, asked the public for help. “Someone in that crowd saw something, recorded something, or has heard something since,” Pierson said. “You do not have to have the whole story, a single photo, a short video, or one detail you think is insignificant may be exactly what moves this investigation forward.”
The Madison School District canceled classes on Monday. School will resume on Wednesday. The district released a statement saying it “is deeply saddened by the shooting.” It noted the game was not organized or sponsored by the district but added that “this violence affects our entire school community.”
Counseling and support services will be available to students and staff. Authorities ask anyone with information to contact the command post at 618-709-7750 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.
