A 17-year-old student received 11 stitches after a group of classmates beat him near Harmony High School last week. That single injury triggered a chain of events that ended with nine arrests, false shooting threats, and a football game played under an expanded police guard.
The attack happened on October 16. According to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, the victim intervened when a group of students began throwing carrots at a girl during lunch. The beating occurred later that day. On October 21, deputies arrested nine students, ages 14 to 18. They face charges of felony aggravated battery and felony inciting a riot.
The legal fallout did not stop there. On Thursday night, October 22, the sheriff's office received a tip that someone would shoot during the Friday night game against St. Cloud High School. By Friday morning, text messages carrying the same threat circulated among students. Deputies investigated both the initial tip and the digital spread of the message. Officials confirmed the threats were false.
Investigators noted that the person making the false claims attributed the threat to the injured teenager. The sheriff's office examined that claim and found it was also incorrect. As of Friday, no one had been identified as the source of the threat reports, nor was any relationship established between the source and the injured student.
Despite the scare, the football game proceeded on schedule Friday evening. The sheriff's office deployed additional deputies to the high school. K-9 units and mounted patrol officers joined the regular security detail. Officers from the St. Cloud Police Department also attended the event.
Captain Kim Montes of the sheriff's office said the department would pursue criminal charges against the person responsible for the false reports. "False reports of a shooting will not be tolerated and if the suspect is identified, that person will be charged," Montes said.
The incident highlights how a single lunchtime dispute can escalate into a complex public safety operation. The nine arrested students are now facing trial, while the football season continues with heightened security measures in place.
