A 36-year-old British woman died on Tuesday after a strong current carried her away while she tried to save her two sons in the Bahamas.
Royal Bahamas Police Force officials stated that the incident occurred near the southern point of Bimini, where the woman had been snorkelling with her husband and children. Police reported that a sudden current swept both boys from the water. As the woman attempted to reach them, the current also pulled her from the site. The two boys were subsequently rescued unharmed.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10:00 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Police dispatched to the scene found that the woman had already been transported to the local clinic. A doctor pronounced her dead at the facility despite resuscitation efforts. Police noted that CPR was administered at the dock after she was pulled from the water.
The woman is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire. The police force opened an investigation into the sudden death. Authorities said foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that officials are in contact with local authorities. The spokesperson added that the government is providing support to the family during this period.
