A 36-year-old British woman lost her life in the Bahamas on Tuesday after a strong current separated her from her two sons during a family snorkeling trip. The incident occurred near the southern point of North Bimini, a location known for its proximity to the United States mainland. The woman was found unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock shortly after 10 a.m., according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

Police officials stated that the woman was with her husband and their two sons when the strong water flow moved the boys away from the group. As she attempted to reach them, the current also took her from the water. The two children were eventually recovered and rescued from the sea. The woman was pulled from the water and transported to the ferry dock, where bystanders administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation before emergency personnel arrived.

The family had already moved the woman to a local clinic for medical attention when officers arrived at the scene. A doctor at the clinic pronounced her dead despite ongoing efforts to revive her. The police force confirmed that foul play is not suspected in the case. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the specific medical cause of death.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force released a preliminary account of the events through a statement on social media. The statement detailed the timeline from the initial report to the final pronouncement of death. It noted that the investigation is ongoing to clarify all aspects of the tragedy.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the death. A spokesperson said, “Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas.” The office stated that officials are in direct contact with local authorities and are providing consular support to the family.

North Bimini is part of a small island group situated between Andros, the largest landmass in the Bahamas, and Miami. The islands are geographically the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The area is also recognized for hosting a major shark research center and for its historical association with author Ernest Hemingway.
