Two shootings near the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing left five people injured on Halloween night. East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown confirmed the injuries during a Sunday afternoon press conference.
Officers first responded to a report of gunfire near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Brown stated that multiple shots were fired in that incident. Three individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a hospital. Two of those victims were listed in stable condition. The condition of the third victim was not immediately known.
A second shooting occurred later that same night. Police responded to the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues, where two additional people were shot. Both victims from the second incident are listed in stable condition. Officers recovered several guns from the scene, though officials have not yet determined if they were the weapons used to fire the shots.
Brown indicated that several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence. Police have not specified whether the two shootings are connected. It is also unclear if any of the five injured victims are students at MSU.
A university spokesperson noted that the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety assisted East Lansing police during the response. The spokesperson clarified that the criminal activity did not take place on MSU property and did not pose a specific threat to the campus.
The East Lansing Fire Department handled a total of 91 incidents over a 24-hour period. That figure includes 75 incidents that occurred specifically on Halloween night.
