Voting officially concluded on Tuesday, marking the end of the general election period for the 2026 midterm cycle. More than 59 million citizens have already submitted their ballots, a volume that approaches half of the total cast in the previous midterm election. Current data indicates Democrats maintain a double-digit advantage in these early returns.

The path to control of the House of Representatives favors the Democratic Party. They require the acquisition of only three seats to secure a majority. This shift occurred despite Republican efforts to implement mid-decade redistricting, a strategy intended to protect existing districts. That defensive measure appears insufficient to prevent a change in chamber leadership.

The Senate race presents a more complex picture. Democrats must flip four seats to assume control, a goal that seemed unlikely at the start of the cycle. However, strong candidate recruitment and national political conditions have made this outcome possible. North Carolina is the primary target where Democrats are favored to win. Beyond that state, the remaining races are either toss-ups or slight Republican favorites.

These contested Senate seats are located largely in states where Donald Trump won by double-digit margins in 2024. All five toss-up districts held by Republicans are in such states, with the exception of Maine. Trump campaigned extensively in these red states in the days prior to the election to maximize Republican turnout.

Republican participation levels will determine the final Senate configuration. High turnout could limit Democratic gains to a single seat. Low turnout among the base could result in Democrats capturing six or seven seats, securing majority control. Michigan remains the top target for Republicans to alter the democratic calculus.

Results began arriving at 6 p.m. Eastern Time from Kentucky and Indiana. Officials warned that final tallies in close races may take days or weeks to complete. Patience is required as states process ballots, with no definitive national winner expected immediately after polls close.
