Midterms hinge on two Midwestern states

Democrats need four net gains to take the Senate, and both Iowa and Kansas are now within reach after years of Republican control.

The U.S. Senate could change hands on Tuesday as Democrats target two traditionally Republican states where polls show tight races. About 50 million Americans voted before Election Day, and President Donald Trump campaigned in both locations over the weekend.

Kansas has not sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in nearly 100 years. That streak may end this week. Republican incumbent Roger Marshall released a closing argument video on Sunday defending his medical practices. His staff opposed the release, fearing the clip might hurt his chances. A New York Times poll gives Democrat Adam Hamilton a five-point lead over Marshall.

In Iowa, the race is effectively a tie. Trump spoke about Republican candidate Ashley Hinson, noting she was heavier in the past but has since changed her diet. He stated she asked him not to bring up her weight, though he described her as being in perfect shape now.

Democrats must win four net seats to regain control of the Senate. Both parties view Iowa and Kansas as essential targets for that goal.

The election is scheduled for Tuesday, with results expected to determine which party holds the majority in the upper chamber.
