Ja Morant will formally challenge the technical foul assessed to him during the Portland Trail Blazers' 136-129 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. The guard, who finished with a season-high 23 points, believes the penalty, estimated at $2,000, was excessive given his reaction to contact.

The flopping technical occurred with four minutes left in the fourth quarter and Portland leading 121-120. While defending Austin Reaves on a drive, Morant absorbed a blow to the chest. He raised his arms and moved backward but remained on his feet. Morant argued that his movement was a natural response to the impact rather than a deliberate fall.

The late-game officiating drew sharp criticism from the Trail Blazers. Three flopping technicals were issued in the final six minutes of a game where the teams combined for 71 free throws. Toumani Camara of Portland and Ziaire Williams of Los Angeles also received technical fouls for flopping during that stretch.

Micah Nori, the Trail Blazers head coach, questioned the volume of these calls. He noted that there were only 27 flopping technicals across 2,000 games in the previous season. Nori also pointed to the late finish, which approached 2 a.m. Eastern Time, as a factor in the game's length.

Morant explained that Portland adjusted its defensive strategy to mitigate these penalties. The team focused on keeping hands visible and absorbing contact through the chest to prove that the offensive player initiated the physicality. He credited his teammates for maintaining their energy after the technical was called.

Damian Lillard, who scored 21 points and hit a late three-pointer to seal the win, said officials were forcing the technicals. He acknowledged that players exaggerate contact but argued that a significant flop should be required for a call during a close contest. Lillard expressed surprise at the repeated calls despite his understanding that flopping was a point of emphasis.

The appeal process will review the replay of Morant's contact with Reaves. The decision will determine whether the $2,000 fine stands or is overturned based on the league's current standards for flopping.
