The Tampa Bay Rays have taken a 3-1 lead in the World Series following a dramatic 12th inning victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. The game ended on a pinch-hit single that scored the winning run, snapping a four-game losing streak for Tampa Bay in the series.
The series has been competitive despite the score. The Brewers had won the first three games, often coming from behind to take leads before closing them out. Tuesday marked the first time Milwaukee fell short in the postseason. The Rays had managed only five hits in the first 11 innings before producing four in the final frame.
The deciding sequence began in the top of the 12th when Brewers outfielder Cooper Pratt hit a home run. The Rays responded in the bottom half. Junior Caminero reached first base on a sharp hit to third, advancing on a throwing error. Liam Hicks then hit a ball into a gap, allowing Caminero to reach third base. DeLuca singled to center field to tie the game. Chandler Simpson added a single, but the runner did not score.
With the game tied and two outs remaining, the Rays sent a pinch hitter to the plate. He chopped a ball over the head of Brewers outfielder Jake Bauers. The ball rolled deep enough for the runner to cross home plate, giving Tampa Bay the win.
The Brewers will start Jacob Misiorowski in Game 5. He posted a 16-5 record in the regular season while leading the Major Leagues in ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP. In the postseason, he has allowed four earned runs on 13 hits and five walks over 13.1 innings. He also has 14 strikeouts. This will be the first time any team faces him for a second time this fall.
Game 5 is scheduled to be played at Milwaukee's home ballpark. The Rays face the prospect of winning the series on the road if they defeat the Brewers. The Brewers have the advantage of home field for the remaining games. The series continues with the fifth game on Wednesday.
