The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night at Tropicana Field to take a 3-0 lead in the 2026 World Series. The victory came after Milwaukee outscored Tampa Bay 8-0 in the fifth inning. All eight runs in that frame were recorded with two outs, a sequence that secured the win for the visitors.
The Brewers’ offensive strategy relied on contact hitting rather than power. They recorded seven consecutive hits in the fifth inning without a home run. This approach aligns with their overall postseason performance, where only 5.6% of their runs have come from home runs. In the World Series, Milwaukee has outscored Tampa Bay 18-6 while hitting just one long ball, a solo home run by Sal Frelick in Game 2.
Christian Yelich played a decisive role in the fifth inning. He reached second base and was ruled safe after a replay review overturned an apparent out. That play kept the inning alive, leading to the subsequent run rally. Jackson Chourio, the 22-year-old left fielder, went 4-for-5 with one RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. He became the youngest player in history to record multihit games in his first three World Series appearances.
Jeff Passan, a reporter for ESPN, noted that the team’s style of play defines the season. He stated that Yelich’s hustle play personified the Brewers, leading to a frame that will be remembered as the defining moment of the 2026 campaign. Bradford Doolittle, another ESPN analyst, emphasized that Milwaukee’s high-scoring offense has been the most effective among the 12 playoff teams on a per-game basis.
The Brewers have not announced their starting pitcher for Game 4. Alden Gonzalez of ESPN suggested that a bullpen game is likely, featuring relievers such as Aaron Ashby, Abner Uribe, and Trevor Megill. The bullpen is fresh following two consecutive off days. Shane Drohan and Dustin May are the likely candidates to face the Rays’ lineup first.
Tampa Bay will turn to Griffin Jax, their No. 4 starter, to begin Tuesday’s game. The Rays must win to avoid being swept, a scenario they have not faced since 2004. The Brewers became the first team since the 2014 Royals to reach double digits in a World Series game without a home run. They also became the first team to lead a World Series game by 10 or more runs through five innings since the 2007 Red Sox.
Chourio is the youngest player since Joe Garagiola in 1946 to record four hits in a World Series game. The Brewers’ 10 runs tied their franchise record for most in a postseason game, a mark set in Game 1 of the 1982 World Series. The team has scored 15 consecutive runs since Tampa Bay took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning in Game 2.
