Manchester United lost 3-0 at Old Trafford to AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, the third consecutive match between the two clubs at that venue to end with the same scoreline. Bournemouth had won three games against United in the 74 years after their first meeting in the 1949 FA Cup third round. The last three meetings, all at Old Trafford in the past two years, have all gone 3-0 to Bournemouth.

Michael Carrick is set to leave his role as manager. Carrick took the job after Ruben Amorim's departure and led United to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification. He spent three seasons at Middlesbrough before taking the United position. Bruno Fernandes spoke about technical decisions after a 4-1 loss in Como. Chants of "It's Carrick you know" were heard at Old Trafford until he entered the tunnel, after which criticism from the stands extended to others at the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe committed $1.6 billion in February 2024 for roughly a quarter of the club, gaining INEOS Group control of football operations. Under that structure, United canvassed the market for a replacement for Erik ten Hag, then triggered an extension clause in his contract when no better option emerged, spent over $400 million on players for him, and dismissed him within four months. Amorim followed, finished 15th, and was dismissed after falling out with employers. Carrick was then brought in first temporarily and then permanently. During the INEOS period, United rank ninth in the Premier League for points and 10th for expected goal difference.

United's expected goal difference through the Atletico Madrid match stood just under plus four, while actual goal difference was minus-one. The team sits 16th in the table, one point above the relegation zone. Sporting director Jason Wilcox spent the 2025 summer budget on attack before spending close to $200 million on midfielders Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba, leaving the left back position unfilled.

The back four of Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw started the 4-0 loss to Brentford in August 2022 and also started the recent draws against Fulham and Everton. Players at the club have seen multiple permanent managers depart without staff facing consequences for results. Cristiano Ronaldo's exit under Ten Hag preceded one of the stronger runs of results in the past five years.

Malcolm Glazer loaded debt onto Manchester United to finance his purchase of the club more than two decades ago. Maguire said after Sunday's 3-0 loss: "At the moment it's nowhere near good enough and something needs to change." Chants at Old Trafford directed at Carrick shifted to the owners and executives once he left the pitch.
