Sunday’s Formula One race in Austin drew a crowd eager for speed and spectacle, but the mood shifted when a familiar political figure stepped onto the podium.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz served as the trophy presenter for the U.S. Grand Prix. He walked to the center of the stage to hand the first-place award to Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli. As Cruz stood before the winner, the crowd let out loud, sustained boos. Eyewitnesses and broadcast footage captured the noise lasting for approximately 90 seconds. The jeering stopped abruptly the moment Cruz placed the trophy in Antonelli’s hands. The boos transformed instantly into cheers, confirming the crowd’s target was the senator, not the race.

David Croft, a Formula One commentator for Sky Sports, noted the reaction during the live broadcast. He observed, “Midterms are coming up; people are already voting with their voice.” Croft’s remark reflected the sentiment visible in the stands at Circuit of the Americas. The booing began even before Cruz reached the podium. Social media posts from attendees noted that the crowd jeered as soon as Cruz was announced as a dignitary for the event.

Cruz is not on the ballot for the upcoming midterm elections. He has not confirmed a second run for the presidency, though political observers suggest he is already campaigning for the role. The Austin incident follows a similar episode in September. Cruz appeared on ESPN’s College Game Day to promote the Protect College Sports Act. During that interview, he faced loud booing from the audience. The bill passed the Senate but awaits a final vote in the House. Critics argue the legislation caps athlete earnings and limits collective bargaining rights.

The senator did not mention the booing in his social media posts. On X, he described the day as a family outing. He wrote, “Incredible day at the Austin Grand Prix with Caroline. Perfect Dad-daughter afternoon.” Cruz added that it was an honor to present the championship trophy to Antonelli. The tweet focused on the win and the father-daughter experience, leaving out the sustained disapproval from the thousands of spectators in the venue.

The event highlighted the intersection of local politics and major sporting events in Texas. Crowds at the Circuit of the Americas used the opportunity to express their views on national legislation. The reaction serves as a clear indicator of public sentiment toward Cruz in his home state ahead of the next election cycle.
