Homeowners on Oahu and Maui are reporting financial losses and sleepless nights after a social media trend involving forceful kicks to front doors reached their neighborhoods. The activity, which typically occurs late at night, has prompted residents to install additional security measures and file police reports.
Matt, a homeowner in the Maui Lani area who requested that his full name not be published, stated that he spent nearly $14,000 repairing damage and upgrading his home’s safety features. He described the noise as unsettling, noting that the violent pounding occurred while he was sleeping at 1:30 a.m.
Mae, a resident of Ewa Beach, reported hearing her front door kicked approximately five times around 9 p.m. She said the impact was powerful enough to shake the entire structure, creating the sensation that an intruder was attempting to break in. Mae described feeling terrified during the incident and expressed shock upon learning the trend had also affected homes in the Maui Lani district.
Surveillance videos from the Maui Lani area show teenagers kicking residential doors in the middle of the night. Authorities indicate that the trend has been occurring consistently for the last several months. The participants are believed to be teenagers who run up to random houses, deliver a high-impact strike to the door, and then flee the scene.
Both Matt and Mae chose to withhold their full names and specific neighborhood details due to fears of retaliation from the vandals. Matt has filed multiple police reports and contacted his homeowners association. He stated that he wants justice but also expressed empathy for the young participants, wondering if the behavior represents a cry for help.
Mae urged parents to discuss respect for neighbors and property with their children. She noted that current economic conditions make repairs expensive and the noise disruptive. She also expressed concern for other families in her area who have reported similar forceful kicking incidents.
Matt is currently asking his community for assistance in identifying the individuals involved in the pranks. The local police departments are aware of the trend and are monitoring reports from affected residents.
