According to the family’s announcement, Stewart had been navigating a short but intense period of illness. The statement described his final months as a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. He was surrounded by his wife, Sunny Ozell, and his children at the time of his passing.
Stewart is widely remembered for two major roles in the 1990s and 2000s. He served as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the subsequent Star Trek: Picard series. He also portrayed Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film franchise, a role he first played in 2000. His career spanned theater, television, and film, earning him a knighthood and widespread acclaim for his stage work as well.
Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, offered a personal tribute on Thursday. Feige recalled his first encounter with Stewart on the set of the original X-Men movie. He described being in awe of the actor, noting that Stewart was brilliant, charming, and warm. Feige added that Stewart possessed a quiet strength and gravitas that extended beyond the screen. He characterized Stewart’s offscreen personality as even more remarkable, citing a wonderfully sharp sense of humor.
Feige stated that it was a privilege to work with Stewart. He noted that the actor’s legacy rests in decades of work and the many people he mentored. Marvel Studios and Marvel Entertainment also issued a joint statement on Instagram. They expressed deep sadness over the passing of the actor. The post praised Stewart for bringing grace, intelligence, and humanity to the role of Professor Xavier. They described him as a singular talent and a true gentleman.
The Marvel statement noted that Stewart will appear in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. The movie is scheduled for theatrical release on December 18. The company extended its condolences to Stewart’s wife, children, and friends, acknowledging the impact of his art on fans worldwide.
