Hersey running back Jackson Travis rushed for 310 yards on a chilly October evening in Mount Prospect, leading his team to a 48-35 victory over Prospect. The win marks Hersey's second consecutive Mid-Suburban East conference title and preserves the Huskies' undefeated record at 9-0. Prospect, which enters the postseason with an 8-1 record, suffered its first loss of the season to a balanced attack that neutralized a late-game rally.
The contest featured a dramatic shift in momentum during the fourth quarter. Prospect had trimmed the deficit to 41-28 with 9:02 remaining, fueled by a surge from quarterback Jackson Cacini. Cacini completed 25 of 39 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns. Seniors Matthew Donnelly and Gordon Kemo contributed to the offensive push, with Donnelly scoring on a short rushing play and Kemo catching a 15-yard touchdown pass.
Hersey responded with physicality and precision. Travis, a junior, answered the Knights' rally with consecutive gains of 19, 14, and 11 yards. He finished the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run that extended the lead to three scores. Travis credited the offensive line for creating space, noting his preference for physical contact. "If I can get contact, I'll take it. I like hitting," Travis said.
Senior quarterback Jake Nawrot, a recruit for Kentucky, orchestrated the passing game with high efficiency. He completed 21 of 25 attempts for 343 yards and four touchdown passes. Nawrot also added a rushing touchdown. His ability to threaten the deep field kept Prospect defenders occupied, opening running lanes for Travis. Josh Riggs led the receiving corps with six catches for 107 yards, while Dom Wentink added a 49-yard touchdown reception.
The Huskies established control early in the game. Nawrot connected with Riggs on a 54-yard pass in the first half to set the tone. Hersey maintained a lead through halftime before Travis extended the advantage with a 59-yard touchdown burst early in the third quarter. That play initiated a 21-point run that overwhelmed the Prospect defense.
Despite the late surge, Prospect could not overcome the deficit. After Travis' second touchdown of the night, Hersey recovered the onside kick following a late Prospect score. The Huskies then controlled the clock to secure the final margin of victory. Coach Tom Nelson emphasized the team's adaptability in managing the game flow.
"Our offense in general is a balanced attack. They want to play the pass, we're gonna run the ball. We'll do either. We don't care," Nelson said. Nawrot noted that once Hersey gained control, the team focused on maintaining that advantage. "When you have that momentum, you have that lead, you cannot give anything back," Nawrot said. "You got to just keep your foot on the gas, all game."
