President Donald Trump will campaign in Iowa and Kansas on Sunday, two days before the midterm elections. The visits serve as his final attempts to influence outcomes in two Senate races that Republicans consider essential for maintaining control of the chamber.
The President had initially canceled these stops but decided to proceed at the last minute. He won Iowa three times and Kansas twice in previous elections. The Republican Party confirmed he will begin at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa, at 2 p.m. Central Time. He will then travel to the Salina, Kansas, regional airport for an event starting at 7 p.m. Central Time.
Polling data suggests the races are close. A recent Marist poll shows Iowa Republican Representative Ashley Hinson trailing Democrat Josh Turek by three points. In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton holds a narrow lead over incumbent Republican Roger Marshall for the first time. Trump’s approval rating stands at approximately 34 percent according to the latest Quinnipiac poll.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, expressed confidence in the Republican ticket despite the numbers. He stated that he has seen voters on the ground and believes the polls are inaccurate and underrepresenting Republicans.
Iowa last sent a Democrat to the Senate in 2008. Kansas last sent a Democrat to the chamber nearly a century ago. The results of these contests will be known Tuesday.
