The war in Ukraine has entered its fifth year without a ceasefire.

More than 4.5 years have passed since the conflict began. During the 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly promised to end the war quickly. At a July 7, 2023, rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa, he told voters he would settle the dispute before taking office. "The side, I want people to stop dying. That's the side I'm on," he said.

Since taking office, Trump has engaged in direct diplomacy. He has met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy twice at the White House. He also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin once in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025. Following that meeting, Trump described the session as productive. "There were many, many points that we agreed on," he stated. He noted that while some major issues remained unresolved, progress was being made. "So, there's no deal until there's a deal," he added.

Legislative action has also shifted rapidly. On September 18, Trump signed the Lindsey Graham Act, named for the late South Carolina senator. This bipartisan law imposed sanctions and tariffs on Russia. Just one month later, on October 16, Trump signed an executive order to waive those sanctions. The waiver removed the financial penalties just weeks after they were enacted.

The fighting on the ground has continued through these diplomatic and legislative moves. The conflict now spans more than 4.5 years, with no final agreement reached between the two sides.
