Senator Chris Murphy is in the hospital recovering from a stroke.
Murphy’s chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, confirmed the diagnosis in a statement on Sunday. She noted that the 53-year-old Democrat is expected to make a full recovery.
Herwitt described how Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm during his son’s hockey game on Saturday afternoon. Hospital staff identified the stroke at a local facility before moving him to Johns Hopkins for close monitoring.
The senator is currently responding well to treatment at the Baltimore hospital. His office indicated he remains stable.
Murphy has served as a key surrogate for Democratic candidates during the midterm election cycle. He is also viewed as a potential 2028 presidential candidate and a leading voice on foreign policy and executive oversight. He recently returned from a tour of the Middle East, where he warned of potential military escalation regarding Iran after the elections.
This health event follows several other congressional medical issues this year. Senator Mitch McConnell spent months in hospital care and rehabilitation. Representative Tom Kean missed months of session to treat depression. In 2022, three other Democratic lawmakers were hospitalized for strokes.
