Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is receiving treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital after suffering a stroke. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, confirmed the diagnosis in a statement released on Sunday, noting that the 53-year-old senator is responding well to care.

The incident began on Saturday afternoon when Murphy experienced numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game. Staff members rushed him to a local hospital where medical professionals identified the stroke. He was subsequently transferred to Johns Hopkins for continued monitoring.

Murphy has remained an active presence in the Senate during the current midterm cycle. He serves as a frequent surrogate for Democratic candidates and has positioned himself as a foreign policy voice within the party. Recent reports suggest he is a potential contender for the 2028 presidential nomination.

The senator recently completed a multi-stop tour in the Middle East. Upon his return, he issued warnings that President Trump would expand military operations against Iran following the midterm elections. His health issue adds to a pattern of physical and mental health challenges among federal lawmakers this year.

Several other members of Congress have faced similar health crises. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spent months in rehabilitation after a hospital stay. Rep. Tom Kean, R-N.J., took an extended leave for depression treatment. In 2022, three Democrats, including Sen. Ben Ray Lujan and Sen. Chris Van Hollen, were hospitalized for strokes.

Herwitt stated that Murphy is expected to make a full recovery. The senator’s office provided the details of his condition on Sunday, confirming his current location and treatment plan.
