The Ballon d'Or ceremony takes place in London on Monday, and Kylian Mbappe is making a strong case for the award despite a season that ended without a major trophy for his club or country.
Mbappe finished the 2025-26 campaign as the top scorer in the La Liga, the Champions League, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He won the Golden Boot at the World Cup in North America for the second consecutive tournament. He also became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals in 22 matches. Lionel Messi ranks second on the all-time list with 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose is third with 16.
At the club level, Mbappe scored 25 goals to lead the La Liga scoring charts. He also netted 15 goals in the Champions League, where he finished as the competition's top scorer. Mbappe said that being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history is a standout achievement. He stated that he is voting for himself for the prize.
The main weakness in his bid is the lack of team success. Real Madrid finished second in the La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This result extended their trophy drought to a second straight season. The club went through managerial changes during the year, with Xabi Alonso followed by Alvaro Arbeloa. France placed fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.
Rival candidates have stronger trophy counts. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane won three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. Mbappe told the radio station RFI that the award goes to a player, not a team. He noted that individual performance and eye-catching moments are what people remember.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho supports Mbappe's claim. Mourinho said that the player who made history this summer is not from Paris Saint-Germain or the Spanish national team.
Historical trends favor players with team success. In the last decade, every Ballon d'Or winner lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping PSG win their first Champions League title. Rodri won the award two years ago after winning Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City.
There is one recent precedent for a winner without a major team trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo won the 2013 Ballon d'Or while Real Madrid finished as league runners-up and Portugal failed to advance past the 2012 World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo scored 66 goals for club and country that season. His win ended Lionel Messi's four-year winning streak. Mbappe has received nine nominations in the past and placed third in 2023.
The prize carries no cash award, but it increases a player's market value and status. Mbappe's bid rests on his individual scoring records and the argument that he was the best player in the world during the 2025-26 period.
