Thomas Cahill, an 87-year-old resident of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was booked into the Davidson County Detention Center on the morning of November 2. The Metro Nashville Police Department filed charges against him for a crash that occurred on Lower Broadway in August. He faces one count of failure to yield resulting in death and three counts of failure to yield resulting in serious injury.

The collision happened on a Saturday in August when Cahill was driving a white 2013 Ford Fusion. He was traveling on Fourth Avenue with his wife and a caretaker in the vehicle. Cahill accelerated through a red light at the intersection with Broadway while pedestrians were crossing. The victims had the walk signal active at the time of the impact. The car struck four people as they crossed the street.

Timothy Wedlock, a 58-year-old man from Australia, died in the accident. Three other pedestrians sustained serious injuries and required hospitalization. Those injured included Matthew Gregg, 44, of Jacksonville, Florida; Dianne Cooper, 58, of Parsons, Tennessee; and Kathleen Broderick, 21, of Knoxville. Cahill was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for minor injuries following the crash.

Detectives initially investigated whether a medical emergency contributed to the driver losing control. According to police, Cahill contends he has no memory of the incident. He was taken into custody more than three months after the collision occurred on the busy downtown street.

The driver was formally processed on Monday, November 2. The charges reflect the specific traffic laws violated during the crash. The case remains with the Davidson County legal authorities as they prepare for the next steps in the judicial process.
